DOMA is a solo dance piece that reflects on the trauma generated in women by heteropatriarchal society and rape culture. Through inhabiting the tension between the grotesque and the sexualized, the piece questions and challenges the powers exerted over the female body.
The work unfolds through dance, performative actions, and symbolic imagery that construct a visual iconography: apples, high heels, a naked woman, sweeping, a garbage bin.
About the title:
“DOMA” is the Spanish word for both “Taming” and “Dressage”. These meanings evoke the act of imposing control and discipline over something wild, as well as the aestheticized practice of classical horse dressage, where the body is trained to turn obedience into elegance. DOMA reclaims these ideas from a feminist and autobiographical perspective, revealing how female bodies have been shaped, disciplined, and sexualized, while transforming that process into a gesture of rebellion and resistance.
BACKGROUND
Andrea El Ameri is a choreographer, dancer and teacher with Moroccan and Andalusian roots, residing in Barcelona. Her practice is part of the field of living arts, where she investigates the body, rhythm, action and image as languages to interrogate ways of being and relating to the world.
Her work is located at the crossroads between critical thinking, dance and stage creation, proposing a body search in constant transformation.
In 2022, Andrea premiered her first piece, Doma, an exploration of the sexual and grotesque in the female body, conceived as a gesture of resistance and affirmation. The work has been supported by the Graner Creation Factory and programmed in spaces such as the Festival de Otoño and the Mercat de les Flors.
He is currently developing Dislocadas: una fiesta móvil, a project in residence at La Caldera and selected for the Barcelona Crea 2024 grants, where he continues his research on the living arts as a territory of encounter between body, thought and creation.
