SYNOPSIS

In this creation, LaCerda explores the instinct that makes every body want to dance to music. The piece investigates dance not only as movement but also as a festive meeting place and paradigm of collectivity.

Inspired by dance marathons and Latin American rhythms, choreographer Edward Tamayo has developed a system for looping choreographic compositions – “mantras” – which focus on the relationship between the feet and the pelvis, within a space, rhythm and group dynamics.

El Baile de la Zurda (The Left-Footed Dance) is a tribute to dance, to the urge to dance through life despite everything, and to the Latin American roots of its creators – the source of their passion for dance.

BACKGROUND

LaCerda is a contemporary dance company dedicated to exploring ritual and its mysteries through performance.

Since 2019, the artistic direction has been led by three Latin American artists: Edward Tamayo (Colombia), Johann Pérez (Venezuela), and Valentina Azzati (Argentina). In 2021, dancer and choreographer Aina Lanas (Catalonia) joined as a performer, and Júlia Vernet (Catalonia) as a producer and providing conceptual support.

LaCerda has presented work at festivals across Europe and Latin America, including the Festival Internacional de Danza en la Ciudad de Bogotá (Colombia), Minifest Bariloche (Argentina), Feria de Huesca, Dansa Metropolitana, Certamen Coreográfico de Madrid, Festival PUFF (Pula, Croatia), Festival Internacional de Performance Mainz (Germany), Trópico Infierno Bogotá (Colombia), Deltebre Festival, Danseu Festival and Esencia Festival (Sala Cuarta Pared, Madrid).

With EL BAILE DE LA ZURDA, they won the ACT Festival Prize which gave them the opportunity to present the piece in South Korea.
