What if theatre were a space between the sky and the earth, the past and the future? What if this place were populated by memories of when humans were not detached from nature and by present-day prophecies about the end of the world?
In R.A.V.E., Cecilia Colacrai is alone on stage, exploring our instinct for preservation through gestures. Through an intense relationship with sonic vibration, she evokes primitivity, leading to a variety of physical states. With extraordinary plasticity and resilience, she transforms again and again, pushing her body to the limit to encourage us to imagine new beginnings.
In this undefined space, rather than speaking about herself, Cecilia speaks through her body: about the finitude and the future of our species. Here, dance becomes a trigger of fiction and offers a language that lets us imagine ways of life beyond the theatre walls.
Text by Joao Lima.
BACKGROUND
Cecilia Colacrai is a dancer, independent creator, and dance teacher. Since 1997, she has been interested in exploring different areas of contemporary dance and other disciplines related to movement and the performing arts.
With R.A.V.E., she sought to challenge herself in both choreographic, conceptual, and interpretive writing, creating a piece that explores diverse physical states, often pushing it to its limits. She intends to share a non-narrative journey with the audience, inviting them to reflect on the instinct and insistence of human beings to preserve their own species, no matter the cost.
She understands the stage as a space of possibilities, as an opportunity to see and imagine the world from other angles. “I am interested in political art, that is, an art of ambiguity, contradiction, incomplete gestures, and uncertain endings” (“The One Not Drawn,” William Kentrige).
As a choreographer and performer, she created RUGE (2023), R.A.V.E. (Revolutionary Agglomeration for Voluntary Extermination) (2022), REVERB (2021), The Incorruptible Beauty of Distance (2011), and Sola? (2005), among others. These pieces have been presented at various festivals in Spain, Argentina, France, Italy, Mexico, and Cuba.
Since her youth, she has collaborated with other artists, strongly believing in exchange and that the sum of perspectives allows us to add layers of subjectivity to our work. Since 2012, she has worked with artists Anna Rubirola and Mireia de Querol in the Big Bouncers Collective.
She has collaborated with Iris Heitzinger, Natalia Jimenez, Federica Porello, Xavier Moreno, Joan Català, João Lima, Alexis Eupierre, Montse Colomé, Toni Mira and Nats Nus, Jorge Albuerne, Emmanuel Grivet, among many other artists.
He is currently a performer in the new project of the Mal Pelo Company and works as a movement assistant with Joao Lima and Carlota Subirós. He is part of the teaching team at the Institut del Teatre and the Moveo physical theater school.
